We all have that song or playlist that reminds us of our favourite holiday, our best friends wedding, an unforgettable birthday celebration or simply a lazy afternoon with good food and great friends (and, Aperol Spritzes, of course).
Sound has the ability to bring people together and to create a mood. When planning your next #Spritzat6, why not incorporate your very own soundscape? We chatted to Niki Dé Saint on how to create just that.
DJ Niki Dé Saint is one of the countries most sought after DJs and musical directors. She specialises in designing bespoke soundscapes and playlists for high-end events and runways, globally. Niki has curated the sounds behind major events ranging from the F1 Grand Prix, VIVID Sydney through to countless Fashion Week Shows in Sydney across to Paris. In the past 12 months, she has graced the stage with artists ranging from Flume to Flight Facilities and Tina Arena…
Niki shares her fool-proof tips to curating the ultimate soundscape at home:
“If you are a serious music lover I highly recommend subscribing to a music platform such as Spotify or Soundcloud, this way you won’t have to put up with the interference of commercials, which can easily disjoint the mood” says Niki.
CREATE A THEME. EVERYTIME
Music has the power to transport us to any place and time, lifting memories and setting new ones… Have fun and get creative! Theme your playlists according to your mood and the occasion – so you can revisit them again and again. Working from home? Curate some tracks that keep you motivated. Entertaining friends at home this Winter? Theme your playlist around tracks that evoke memories of warm summer afternoons.
VISUALISE A STORY BOARD
Planning a special event or entertaining friends and family? That calls for a great playlist. Niki loves to “visualise a storyboard” when putting together her soundscapes and curating her song selection. Visualise where you want to be, how you want to feel and pair a sound or song to mimic that…
“With my exclusive Aperol mixes I wanted to musically translate ‘ The Sound of a Spritz @ 6 ‘ as the taste of togetherness, so I’m wanting my listeners to enjoy the shared moment, while feeling chic & relaxed” shares Niki.
TRY YOUR HAND AT YOUR OWN MIXES!
Try Virtual DJ, online software available to download at https://www.virtualdj.com. This is a great DJ tool while merging for live mixes but keep an eye out on these levels because once you’ve merged your favourite songs together, you’ll want to reset the bass, mids and or tops back to normal so your mixes feel sonically clear & good to the ear.
It’s all about experimenting, that’s how you discover new tricks and ideas, so jump in and don’t worry about making mistakes!
Really focus on the bass when mixing your own tracks – too much bass or not enough can transform the sound of a track.
“Remember, music is sensory, it’s linked to the nervous system. This is why it can be so uplifting or dramatic because it actually triggers an emotional response. So we have at our fingertips this amazing tool in mixing (whether that’s using software to make your own mixes or simply curating songs on Spotify) which virtually transcends beautiful vibrations to our audience helping to create new & wonderful experiences”Niki De Saint
